Lukáš Cabala
1986
Lukáš Cabala was born in the industrial city of Trenčín, where he founded the online second-hand bookshop Čierne na bielom (Black on White) with his parents in 2011 and continues to keep it afloat to this day. He made his debut with the intimate novella Satori v Trenčíne (Artforum, 2020), which was nominated for the Anasoft Litera Award and won the Debut of the Year award in a vote by readers of Knižná revue. Later, Artforum published two more novellas: Jar v Jekaterinburgu (Spring in Yekaterinburg) and Spomenieš si na Trenčín? (Do You Remember Trenčín?). The latter was nominated for the Anasoft Litera Award, the René Award, and the European Union Prize for Literature. His works have been translated into several languages. In 2025, Lukáš Cabala published another realistic novel, Summer Stood in the Hot Air, again with Artforum. He is also the author of the children's book Autumn in the Forest and the autobiographical fairy tale Life in the Raspberry Mountains. The idea for his current dark novella Terpentín (Turpentine) was suggested to Cabala by the painter Juraj Toman, with whom he discussed the emerging story on an ongoing basis.
